Why a screenshot comes out black on Windows
A black capture can come from a rendering mismatch, a protected video surface, a remote-session policy or a secure desktop prompt. First test an ordinary, non-sensitive window. If that captures correctly, investigate the affected application rather than assuming the screenshot tool is broken. Do not try to defeat deliberate capture protections.

Identify the pattern
One black rectangle and an entirely black screen suggest different checks.

Run a harmless comparison
Capture an ordinary window with Snipping Tool. Open the saved image in another viewer. If only one application or video area is black, the problem is likely specific to that surface or policy.

Check the capture target
Confirm the intended display, window and session are active. In remote work, establish whether you captured the local client or the remote desktop; they are not interchangeable.

Check supported updates
For unprotected content, close and reopen the application and use organisation-approved application and graphics-driver updates. Compare a supported capture mode. Record the result before changing more settings.
Rendering and protection
Not every surface is available to every capture path.
Hardware-accelerated video and some remote-desktop paths are composed differently from ordinary interface pixels. A capture method can miss those surfaces even when you can see them. That symptom alone does not establish whether the cause is a bug or a deliberate restriction.
Applications can request that their windows be blank or excluded from supported capture mechanisms. DRM-protected video and managed remote sessions may also restrict capture. Ask the application owner or IT team about an approved export rather than disabling protection.
Do not install untrusted capture drivers, disable security controls or run an unknown tool as administrator merely to bypass a black result.
Secure desktop
An elevation prompt is a security boundary.
Windows normally presents User Account Control consent and credential prompts on the secure desktop, separate from ordinary applications. A normal screenshot workflow should not be expected to capture that protected surface.
Keep secure-desktop protections enabled. For documentation, describe the prompt or use an authorised training example that does not expose credentials. If all ordinary captures remain black, give IT the application, display/session context, reproduction steps and non-sensitive comparison results.

- State whether the issue occurs locally, remotely or both.
- Use approved diagnostics without retaining private screen content.
- Accept an intentional restriction and choose an authorised alternative.
Tool choice
Choose a method that fits the job.
